Scientific Illustrator
Drawing, Fine Art

Kelsey Kinnett is a Scientific Illustrator from Wilmington, North Carolina with her BFA from Pratt Institute and a certification in Scientific Illustration in progress from California State, Monterey Bay.
Kelsey grew up drawing daddy longlegs with sidewalk chalk, eating sour clovers and sweet honeysuckles off the bush, playing hide and seek in the woods and listening for muskrats at night on moonlit lakes. A half Mexican girl in small town North Carolina, the natural world was the world she felt most accepted in. She showed her gratitude for nature through paintings and drawings of flora and fauna, and during her undergraduate studies at Pratt Institute continued to create thematic art focusing on the psychological benefits and cultural symbolism in nature. Through art she became a researcher and an educator, both of which led her to pursue a career in Scientific Illustration.
Kelsey was an educator in New York City schools for four years while also working freelance work, creating for local sustainable clothing companies, school merchandise, public murals, and small exhibitions. Upon completion of her certification she hopes to continue using her work as an educational tool, working for conservation based organizations including scientific journals, public parks, museums, and aquariums in order to make complex scientific material accessible to diverse audiences.
